Itinerary

Arrival day

When you arrive at our base camp, located just a few minutes’ drive from the Vioolsdrif/Noordoewer border, you will be welcomed by our camp manager. You can unwind and scout out the camp after long day of travelling. Dinner is served at 7pm.

You will enjoy an early breakfast at 6am to fuel up for the adventure ahead. Your guide will teach you what you need to know before the boats hit the water. This safety talk and equipment demonstration will include a rowing tutorial, what to do if you capsize and how to tackle the rapids. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, so that you are completely comfortable embarking on this journey. Remember to listen carefully to your guide and follow his instructions at all times – your safety is our top priority!

You will begin to row from base camp and take in the beautiful scenery and wildlife around you. In the afternoon, you will have a well-deserved break for lunch on the riverbanks. You will continue downstream and enjoy the refreshing water and the basking sun. After a day of hard work, you will find a camping spot on the riverbanks where you’ll sleep under the stellar night sky. The guides will prepare a tasty dinner for you while you explore the riverbanks and settle down for the day.

Wake up with the glorious sunrise while the guides get breakfast ready. Leisurely drift downstream and take in the breathtaking scenery of the Namib desert. Swim, fish, play ball or just sit back and relax. You will spend each night on a different riverbank.

If the river is full enough, you will resupply at Sjambok and row onwards until the Aussenkher collection point. This means that you rafted approximately 60 kilometers.
If the river isn’t full enough, you will only row until Sjambok and be collected there, making the total distance that you rafted 45 kilometers.
You may hike up to the abandoned fluorspar mines for where you will see stunning views of the Rigtersveld and the mighty Orange River winding through the mountains. When reaching the extraction point, we will pick you up and bring you back to base camp, where you will enjoy dinner. You will overnight in the basecamp after your adventure.

After three lovely days on the river, you will have breakfast and then depart home to plan your next Orange River trip.

What to pack

It can be daunting when it’s time to pack for a trip like this. Don’t worry! We’re here to guide you. It is important that you don’t bring too much clothes. During the day we recommend you wear swimwear and a long sleeved shirt to keep the sun off. Try to bring only the essential toiletries: a small container of biodegradable soap, a toothbrush/toothpaste and toilet paper is all you need.

Sun protection is the most important thing to take with you on the river. Lots of sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat and a long sleeved shirt will save you from painful sunburns. Always remember enough sunscreen and plenty of water!
