Frequently Asked Questions
Take a look at the questions we get asked most frequently. If you still have unanswered questions, feel free to contact us!
What are the age limits?
Anyone is welcome on the Orange River, but we do not recommend children younger than five to do a rafting trip. There is no maximum age – as long as you feel comfortable and confident enough to embark on this journey, we will receive you with open arms.
What should I pack?
It is important that you pack light and only bring the essentials – you won’t have much space on the river. If you do a trip where a resupply is possible, you can arrange to have new clothes or snacks to be delivered to you. Check out our packing list below.
Is there cell signal?
On the river itself there is no cell signal or internet connection. However, there is free WiFi as well as Vodacom and MTN connection at out base camp.
How do I get there?
You will have to arrange your own travel between your home and our base camp. The only transport we offer is from the extraction point in Aussenkehr and the base camp after your rowing trip. All other transportation, registration of vehicles etc will be your responsibility. If you would prefer that we book an Intercape bus for you, we will happily do so, but all costs will be covered by you.
How fit do I have to be?
You have to be relatively fit, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident that your body is capable of carrying you through the trip you have selected. There will be periods when you row hard and times where you just leisurely float downstream. The river is grade 2, which means that no part of it is particularly daunting.
What happens in an emergency?
In case of an emergency, the guides will come to your rescue. If a call to base camp is necessary, one of the guides will row to get signal. Our guides are fully prepared for anything that may happen on the river, so there’s no need to worry.
What do I need to cross the border?
All persons crossing the border must be in possession of a passport valid at least 6 months from date of departure. Children under 18 must have an unabridged birth certificate. Please click here to see vehicle requirements (subject to change).
Where can I put the things I'm not taking on the river with me?
We recommend you put everything in your car. The parking at basecamp is safe and there is no need to worry about your belongings. If you don’t want to take your car keys on the river, you can hand them in to the camp manager.
Where can I buy snacks and drinks?
There is a bar at the camp that stocks basic drinks and snacks. If you need something that is not available at the camp, there are petrol stations nearby with a greater variety. If there is a truck going to Aussenkehr, you can request that we buy something for you if you provide cash (no alcohol).
Will I encounter any dangerous animals?
No, you most likely will not. Leopards roam the mountains in places, but they are extremely cautious of any human activity. If you are lucky enough to spot them, it will be from very far away.
You will see an array of insects, fish, birds, reptiles and mammals, but none of them will want to eat you 🙂
Never disturb any wildlife if you can help it!
Will there be ablution facilities?
On the river, there are no ablution facilities. A portapotty will be set up by the guides when you reach the bank where you will spend the night. You can bathe in the river using biodegradable soap. At basecamp there’s ablution facilities for you to use.
Is the water drinkable?
Although some may be totally fine drinking the river water, we HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST IT. Make sure to bring at least 2,5 litres of water for every day you will be spending on the river. Additionally, you may want to bring cooldrinks or electrolyte drinks as well as a few water purifying tablets in case of an emergency.
What's the weather like?
Summer months are very hot, with the possibility of rainfall between November and April. Winter months are usually nice and warm during the day, with colder nights. The possibility of rainfall decreases between May and October.
